Our History

How We Got to Where We Are

The original land, 31 1/2 acres, was owned by Henry Eames of Paxton. In 1922 he sold the land known as the "Cook Lot" to George Betts of Worcester. In 1983, George Betts sold 17+ acres to John Stapleton of Paxton and 13+ acres to Dorothy Hunt of Rutland. A tavern was built on the lot beginning in 1938 by Dorothy Hunt and finished in 1940. She called the tavern Hunthurst and ran it until 1950. In 1951, the property was purchased by Robert Stamper Jr. and Mary C. Lee, and was renamed as The Birches. In 1960, the restaurant was purchased by Carney Trippe. He and his wide Sylvia operated the Birches for 24 years. In 1984 the restaurant was purchased by Leopold Dubeau and Richard Wigglesworth and was operated as Ladd's restaurant. In 2000, the restaurant was purchased by William Toomey and his parents, Mike and Paula, and continues to operated as Ladd's restaurant.
